A few things to remember:

  • Please make sure you are precise in your request.
  • IT probably don't know what you mean by "Is the system down?" or "Why can't I print?".
  • Be specific, explain what kind of system you are on (Operating system, AU equipment or private (BOYD) etc). What were you doing when the problem occurred. 

Then it is a lot easier for IT to help you.

If IT need to see you in person remember to explain when you are available, especially if you are often out of office.
